Rep. Fraizer Introduces Tax Credit Bill for Home Modification, Services

At a hearing of the House Aging & Long-term Care Committee on February 20, Representative Fraizer (R-Newark) provided sponsor testimony on a bill that would create a state tax credit for individuals who pay for home modifications and services that help them remain in their own home as they age.

“This bill, which will provide a single $5,000 tax credit to a taxpayer, will reimburse these older Ohioans to remain in their homes and allow them to ‘age in place’ with appropriate but necessary updates. These older Ohioans require an updated residence to remain at home, but will lead better lives at home,” said Representative Fraizer in sponsor testimony.

Questions from the committee included whether the tax credits would be means-tested, how it would be administered, and how it would be financed. The bill would not be means-tested, and the Ohio Department of Aging would be responsible for reviewing applications for the tax credit. The bill would cap credits at $10 million, so roughly 2,000 would be eligible for the tax credit.

LeadingAge Ohio is currently reviewing HB 498 and will be providing testimony at future hearings on the bill. LeadingAge Ohio members wishing to weigh in on the bill should email Susan Wallace, Director of Government Relations & Public Affairs at swallace@leadingageohio.org.
